Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome is a common condition affecting over 75% of adults in Korea.
It is caused by insufficient tear production,
excessive tear evaporation, or an imbalance in tear composition.
Since the causes are diverse, addressing the underlying
root cause is crucial for effective treatment.

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

The tear film consists of three layers: the innermost
mucin layer, the middle aqueous layer, and the outermost
lipid layer that prevents evaporation.

The lipid layer is composed of oils secreted by the Meibomian glands*
in the eyelids. Healthy
Meibomian glands secrete clear, uniform oil to prevent
tear evaporation.

Comparison between Normal and Damaged Meibomian Glands

What are Meibomian Glands?

These are glands located in the eyelids that secrete oil.
This oil forms a protective tear film that retains moisture and
helps clear foreign substances.
However, blockage of these glands due to aging or other
factors can prevent oil secretion,
leading to the development of Dry Eye Syndrome.

Dry Eye Syndrome is generally categorized into two types:
Aqueous Deficient (low tear production) and Evaporative (poor tear quality).

Most cases of dry eye are caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
Therefore, we recommend visiting an eye clinic
for a professional examination and appropriate treatment.

TBUT (Tear Break-Up Time) Test

This test measures how long the tear film remains stable on the eye surface.
By checking the exact point of tear film rupture, it assesses the severity of
dry eye and tear quality.

Dry Eye Treatment

Beyond temporary symptom relief, our premium laser solutions restore a healthy environment to the ocular surface.

IPL 레이저 M22

01. IPL Laser M22 (Intense Pulsed Light)

Apgujeong Eye Clinic treats dry eye syndrome using the Lumenis M22 IPL laser.
By applying laser energy to the
surface and surrounding areas of the eyelids,
the thermal effect improves the
health of blood vessels
responsible for tear secretion.

Restoration of meibomian gland function US FDA-cleared safety Immediate return to daily activities No damage to the skin surface

A warm "Oasis Laser" that gently opens blocked tear ducts
and provides soothing moisture.

오큐트론 (Ocutron)

02. Ocutron

When the white of the eye (conjunctiva) becomes loose, tears cannot remain properly,
worsening dry eye
symptoms. Ocutron is a breakthrough treatment that
delivers safe radiofrequency (RF)
energy into the loose conjunctiva to firm the area
and prevent the
progression of dry eye.

CE MDD (Europe) and US FDA approved Improvement of conjunctival laxity Non-incisional and sutureless procedure Quick return to daily activities

Firming loose conjunctiva,
a non-incisional solution for severe dry eye

Dry eye treatment is

recommended to:
